Mahjong Solitaire

Free Mahjong Solitaire

Mahjong Solitaire is a calm and satisfying tile matching puzzle. Every board is built from the classic set of mahjong tiles stacked into a layered shape, and your goal is simple. Clear all of the tiles by pairing them up. You can play as many boards as you like for free, right in your browser, with no download and no account.

How the game works

Tiles sit in layers, so some rest on top of others. You can only take a tile when it is free, which means nothing covers it and one of its sides is open. Find two matching free tiles, remove them, and keep going until the board is empty. It is easy to learn in a minute and rewarding to get good at over time.

How to Play — Step by Step

  1. Look for tiles that are free. A tile is free when no tile rests on top of it and either its left or right side is open.
  2. Select a free tile. The tiles you can still match stay bright, while blocked tiles look dimmed.
  3. Find its match. Two tiles go together when they show the same picture. Any flower goes with any other flower, and any season goes with any other season.
  4. Select the matching free tile to lift the pair off the board.
  5. Keep clearing pairs until every tile is gone. If you get stuck, use a hint or shuffle the tiles that are left.

Strategy Tips

Always work on the tiles that free up the most of the board. Peeling tiles off the long rows on the sides opens up the pieces trapped underneath, so clear those early. Try to keep a spare pair in reserve rather than removing every match the moment you see it, because that spare can rescue you later when choices run thin. When you have a choice, take the tile that unblocks two or more others. If nothing obvious is left, use a hint to spot a legal pair, and save the shuffle for when the board truly has no moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mahjong Solitaire free to play?

Yes, completely. You can play unlimited boards in your browser with no download and no sign up.

How do I know if a tile is free?

A tile is free when nothing is stacked on top of it and at least one side, left or right, is open. Free tiles look bright, while blocked tiles look dimmed.

Which tiles can I match?

Two tiles go together when they show the same picture. As a bonus rule, any flower goes with any other flower and any season goes with any other season, so those eight tiles are always easy to pair.

What happens if I run out of moves?

You can shuffle the tiles that are left to rearrange them and keep playing, or start a fresh board. Every board we deal has at least one full solution.

Can I undo a move?

Yes. Undo is unlimited, so you can step back as many moves as you like while you plan your next match.
